Sportsmen's Lodge-1982S
A photo of Ben at an event sponsored by the South California Motion Picture Council at the Sportsmen's Lodge on April 7, 1982. With Ben are Jean Doran, Council President, and a man identified as "Art N." on the back of the original 3x5 photo. According to the Council's website (https://scmotionpicturecouncil.com/), it "is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1936 to promote the best in motion pictures. One of the oldest Hollywood organizations, this prestigious group has been encouraging the production of diverse and international family oriented films and television programs for almost 80 years. We promote civic-minded, educational and cultural programs of exceptional merit and present Golden Halo awards for the best in movies, television, stage plays, and the performing arts." The Sportsmen's Lodge is the venerable hotel -- with lakes where you could fish for your dinner -- founded in the 1880s in the area that afterwards became Studio City. Its location near Republic Studios made it a favorite eating place for Republic's actors and crew, especially its western stars such as John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. It remains a drawing spot for celebrity guests, although the 1971 San Fernando earthquake diverted the spring that fed the lakes and they were closed for fishing.
